Welcome!

A very warm welcome is extended to everybody from Elizabeth Smith Veterinary Practice. We are an independently owned small animal and equine practice located on the road between the villages of Ickwell and Upper Caldecote, near Biggleswade.

The practice was established in 1982 by Mrs Helen Papworth, but a constant expansion meant that we moved from the original premises in Ickwell Green to Shuttleworth College in April 1998.

Elizabeth Smith joined the practice in 1994 and bought it from Helen in May 2002. Her goal was to design and build a permanaent, purpose built practice and we finally moved into our current premises on 3rd March 2011.

Our vision is to provide the best, first opinion small animal and equine veterinary care for your pets. We strive to give excellent customer care by providing a sympathetic, flexible and efficient service as we offer the personal touch and do our best to encourage case continuity. As most of us are pet owners ourselves we understand the hugely important role our pets have as a member of our families.

We are very proud to be one of the only practices in the local area to offer our own out of hours service. If you need emergency treatment outside of our normal hours then one of the practice's veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses will be available to help your pet so you will be assured you will see one of our regular staff at our own building on Ickwell Road. Please call our landline number on 01767 627317 and follow the instructions.

#### CURRENT OFFERS ######: FREE blood testing to detect early heart disease in large/giant dog breeds. If you have a breed that is at risk eg. Boxer, Great Dane, Dobermann or many others, we will blood test them for free to check for an early indicator of Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

#### the 'Talk About Laminitis' offer is back and being run by Boehringer Ingelheim. They are offering free blood tests for Equine Cushings disease (PPID) if you suspect your horse/pony may be suffering from this condition. If they are approx 15yrs+, get recurrent laminitis, tend to hang on to their winter coat or drink alot then have a look at their website at www.talkaboutlaminitis.co.uk or call the practice. #####

Due to the success of our 'fixed fee' dental promotions we have decided to take the fear out of unknown dental costs and permanently set a fixed fee for every dental we do, so if you've been putting off getting your pet's teeth sorted please call reception for details and to get your pet booked in.

**Alert to all rabbit owners**

There is a new disease affecting rabbits in the UK, full name Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease variant 2 (RHD-2), and it is fatal in at least 25% of rabbits that catch it. Rabbits may die suddenly with no symptoms, or may appear non-specifically unwell (poor appetite, reluctant to move).

There has been cases confirmed in Bedford and Henlow. The virus is spread by direct and indirect contact between wild and pet rabbits. The only way to protect against it is vaccination, as the virus can survive for long periods in the environment, and can be transferred on shoes, clothing, hay and bedding. Both indoor and outdoor rabbits are at risk.

We recommend that all rabbits are vaccinated with the standard myxomatosis and RVHD-1 vaccine every year, as before. They should also receive additional vaccination with the new RVHD-2 vaccine every 6 months. The two vaccinations cannot be given at the same time (a minimum gap of 2 weeks is required).

We are strongly recommending that all rabbits are vaccinated against this potentially fatal virus.

Please contact us if you would like to book in for the vaccination or if you would like more information - 01767 627317
